Age: its significance in nonembolic cerebral infarction.

چکیده
Age: Its Significance in Nonembolic Cerebral Infarction • The frequency of occurrence of nonembolic cerebral infarction is linearly related to age. The sexual frequency of nonembolic cerebral infarction is directly related to the age group of the sample studied. The mortality of nonembolic cerebral infarction and its prognosis are most closely related to the age of the patient at the time of stroke. The older the patient, the higher is the mortality and the poorer the prognosis. The cause of death in nonembolic cerebral infarction is as much a function of age-related concurrent diseases, especially cardiac disease, as it is of stroke itself. The natural history of stroke is more related to the natural history of cardiac disease than it is to cerebral vascular disease. These data may be viewed as lending support to the thesis that nonembolic cerebral infarction and the diseases that are frequently found with it, such as diabetes, cardiac disease and hypertension, are related in their occurrence and mortality to aging and may truly be concurrent events and not etiologically related one to the other. Improvement in Motor Performance in Paretic and Paralyzed Extremities Following Nonembolic Cerebral Infarction • The problems involved in measuring improvement as well as the conceptual difficulties in considering this phenomenon were considered in general terms. Data on 300 patients with nonembolic cerebral infarction followed from five to nine years are presented, indicating that improvement ...
متن کاملCerebral Small Vessel Disease in Branch Retinal Artery Occlusion.
Purpose We investigated the pathophysiology of branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) by evaluating the retina, brain, and carotid artery in patients with BRAO. Methods This study was a retrospective registry study. We used 46 eyes from 46 patients with acute BRAO and evaluated the medical history, including previous cardiovascular disease, and compared brain magnetic resonance images (MRI) a...
متن کاملPrevalence and significance of hyperdense middle cerebral artery in acute stroke.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Early noncontrast computed tomographic scans may visualize a hyperdense middle cerebral artery before the infarct becomes visible. This sign disappears within a few days, corresponds to the clot itself, and might be associated with a poor prognosis. The aim of the study was to determine its prevalence, diagnostic value, relationship to demographic data, ability to separat...

: Nonembolic Occlusion of the Middle Cerebral and Carotid A rteries—A Comparison of Predisposing Factors • Selected clinical characteristics of patients with nonembolic occlusion of the middle cerebral artery were compared with those of patients with atherosclerotic occlusive lesions at the bifurcation of the common carotid artery. Unexpected differences were observed in the race-age distributi...
متن کاملNonvalvular atrial fibrillation as a cause of fatal massive cerebral infarction in the elderly.
By studying 3,408 consecutive autopsied elderly patients, we found that two thirds of the 132 massive cerebral infarctions (86) were embolic, of cardiac origin. Embolic infarction associated with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation was seen in 48 cases (36%), half due to the first stroke. Embolic infarction associated with heart disease other than nonvalvular atrial fibrillation was seen in 23 case...
